How/When to Use:
The disposable airway device is also known as an oropharyngeal airway (or OPA) is a medical device that opens or maintains a patient’s airway. It does this by preventing the tongue from covering the epiglottis, which could prevent a patient from breathing. Typically, when an individual becomes unconscious, their jaw muscles relax, allowing the tongue to fall back and obstruct the airway. To begin, select the correct sized OPA by measuring the length from the jaw to your mouth and lubricate with water-soluble lubricant. Insert in the opposing direction until you reach the throat and rotate to the proper orientation to maintain an open airway. The OPA is meant for individuals who are unconscious because if done to someone conscious, this could trigger the gag reflex and result in vomiting, potentially leading to an obstructed airway.
